Advice for women starting out a career in social sciences

Dr. Acker's first piece of advice is "have courage, and keep on with it", and she thinks that perseverance is key. She believes that she has had some advantages that women starting out now don't necessarily have, since the job market was more open at the time that she entered the feel. She believes that this also led her to being able to speak out more on certain issues because she knew that if she ran into trouble, she would be able to find other employment. She recommends working hard, but also mentions that society expects people to work so hard now that they do not have time for a normal life. In addition to hard work, she would like to see a move to campaigning for the ability to speak out and have a normal home life without fear of retribution at work.
