*Acker was the first woman that the University of Oregon's Department of Sociology had ever put on the faculty. At the time, only nine percent of the faculty-and two percent of the full professors-were women. There was only one full professor who was a female in the entire college of Arts and Sciences. This led her to do a study of gender at the University of Oregon, which was her first full work.
*Dr. Acker decided to go back to school to get her Ph.D. while buying fabric. She was buying bolts of fabric for a dress, but she realized that she would have nowhere to where the dress because she was spending all of her time being an at-home mother.
